What makes a Jadau render authentic
Jadau (also Jarau or Jadtar) is a full-craft technique from the Mughal-era Rajasthani royal ateliers. Pure gold is heated until soft, then hand-hammered around uncut gemstones. No prongs, no glue, no modern setting hardware — the heated gold takes the shape of the stone. To render Jadau convincingly, three visual cues must be right:
- The gold has a hand-worked, uneven, matte-to-satin surface — not the machined smoothness of modern setting.
- The stones sit embedded, not perched. The gold physically surrounds the base of each stone.
- The reverse carries meenakari or nakashi work. A Jadau piece is finished on both sides.
